Busy, busy, busy

Just popping up for air to introduce Mrs. Eton the Cook, she has a lovely tasty meat pie for tea and is on Ebay now hoping for a new home to dish it up in !

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180466566117&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

Its busy busy busy here in cold wet Tyneside and this week I will mostly be in the shed sculpting as fast as my hands will go and trying to get some lovely new dolls ready for the spring run of fairs.
Next year I will be cutting down on the fairs a little. I really love to do them and meet my customers but its so hard trying to keep up stock for each when there are only weeks between them.
I cut down 2 fairs this year but still have 9 and with a full order book and a head full of ideas I would love the luxury of a little more time !
I'm aiming for 5 or 6 fairs a year and then I can hopefully find some time to just smell the roses :0)
Am very excited as I have finally made my Cleopatra ! well most of her...............she is armless at the minute but should be completed tomorrow, her first arms just werent right, she needs full bare arms to show off her costume . I'll post a pic as soon as she is finished. She has the most amazing jewelled head dress and collar by a very talented lady who does amazing beading.
I'll post her details with Cleo's photo . Next Marc Anthony who I want to be very handsome with muscular legs ! I'm not used to sculpting men without trousers LOL so he may take some time but hopefully he will be ready for Miniatura.

A new name for my tiny doll

When I was thinking up a name for my little doll I came up with more than a few !
Everyone I spoke too liked La Petite Belle best of all .I did too as it means The Little Beauty which I think she is and featured half of my business name.
I have since found out that the name is already being used by a very talented miniature pattern maker.
Obviously I feel I can no longer use the name too so I have renamed my little doll .
She is now called Petite Bella which is very sweet and suits her very well :0)
All of you who have purchased my little doll as "La Petite Belle" now own a very collectable little doll !
I will be making new labels for my doll boxes tomorrow and have already changed her name in my etsy store and on ebay.

The Princess and the Pea

I made a Princess and the Pea vignette a year ago with a beautiful bed and a very angry and haughty dark haired Princess ! The Princess was sold to a lady who had just made a bed with many matresses and I was left with a lovely four poster bed which has sat around the shed ever since begging for a new princess.
Finally I have her ready and she is very different from the first. This Princess has tumbling golden locks and looks quite surprised to have had her beauty sleep disturbed by the tiny pea she holds in her hands !
She is now for sale contact me for details .
A recent blog comment made me realise I havent really posted much about how to purchase my work !
I sell mostly at selected UK Fairs and exhibit at Spring and Autumn Miniatura and Summer and Xmas Kensington Dolls house festivals amongst others, details are on my website www.bellabelledolls.co.uk
I also work to commission. All of my dolls are one of a kind. I will sometimes repeat a character but they will always be a bit different as I dont use molds and dont like to do exactly the same costuming.
However as the Princess and the Pea shows I will recreate a character but in a different way.
For instance, I have made quite a few Alice in wonderlands and white rabbits and all are completely different from each other.
I also work from photographs to create portrait dolls and will make a doll from a customers own ideas as long as I feel I can do justice to the doll !
I have a waiting list for dolls which is around 6 months but believe me time flies !
Anyone wanting to place an order simply need to email me. There is also a contact page on my website.
I do sell on ebay sometimes , but sometimes I am just so busy making orders and fair dolls that ebay takes a back seat. I love the thrill of the auction though so do like to keep up with it and as I tend to start auctions at a fairly low price its often a chance for customers to snap up a bargain !
I'm always happy to discuss ideas for dolls and love a challenge :0)
I have an Etsy store too where I usually have my La Petite Belle dolls for sale. They are tiny collectable dolls that I can make within a week . I have a link to this in my blog side bar.
Well I am busy now making dolls for my next fair so better get back to work !

New dolls and suggestions please !

I've been busy making new dolls for my up-coming fairs.
This lovely old lady is a very kindly witch and she desperately needs to be doing something !
This is not her chair and she is a sitting doll so any suggestions ? she really needs something tobring her to life and she just wont tell me what it is LOL she knows though, I can tell !

This one is a bit of a tease.............................. she is an old witchy nanny and is pushing a lovely old antique miniature pram I bought at the last fair I attended.
I have sculpted a tiny elfin baby to go in the pram but just havent had time to finish him yet.
However nanny wanted to be photographed so here she is !

This rather handsome barber has been unfinished on my table for weeks so it was a relief to finally dress him yesterday. I do love his moustache, and unlike Sweeneys victims this customer will leave the barbers with a close shave !
My next fair is Brentwood fairs at the Glasgow Premier Inn in Scotland Feb 28th and these dolls will be available to purchase along side many others.
I've also been rethinking my fair table display and have had some new display shelves made soI can spread my dolls out more and really show them off.
I'll take some pics of the new set up, its rather minimal but you notice the dolls rather than the stand which has to be a good thing !
Tomorrow I'm back in the shed and have loads of ideas for more new characters :0)

Bye Bye Bearingtons

I've been having a busy week ! The fact that I have a fair each month from now until June has spurred me on to get busy in the shed and I have made a start by trying to tie up some loose ends and half finished projects that are driving me to distraction.
Something had to go and it is Bearingtons BonBons .
Bought as a kit in a moment of madness I had visions of a 24th scale heaven fullof miniature sweeties I would hand make from cold porcelain.
Yes.............cold porcelain !!
What was I thinking ! There is no way on earth I have the patience to make 24th sweets from anything but cold porcelain was a particularly ridiculous choice as I've never used it before .
So I happily built the shop, clad it in tiny brickslips and slate tiles and oohed and aahed over it ............................and thats it.
Still standing unloved and unfinished and destined forever to empty shelves. It is a constant reminder of how impulsive I can be and just sits on my shelf filling me with guilt.

Update !
I've just sold Bearingtons on Ebay :0) So glad it will be off to a new home as its such a sweet little house .

Two Butlers and a Tiny Fisherman !

Finally I am really getting back in the swing of things !
It seemed to take a long time to really get back to work after the xmas holidays but a run of shows looming and a full order book have forced me back into action........................
So here we have two very different butlers. The first is a commission who turned out so nicely I would like to keep him.
The second is a rather friendly looking soul who will be on my table at my first show this year in Glasgow February 28th.
I am really looking forward to it. I always love to visit Scotland so its especially nice to combine it with a show.
This one is at the Premier Inn , Brentwood Fairs run by the lovely Pat Kay
I am going to be very busy in the shed for the next few months so its just as well I had the big tidy up.
I had an ulterior motive for this as my shed is going to be featured in the March issue of American Miniaturist mag. out at the end of february. I'm thrilled to bits !

This little fellow is also going with me to Scotland.
I really need to make some 24th scale ladies too but for some reason I am having a bit of a male obsession right now !
A lot of the doll makers I know prefer to make lady dolls but I just love to make men.
Vive la differance !
Theres just something so enjoyable making a 3 inch tall male and I loved making this wee fellow.
Today was spent sculpting a rather unusual nanny and her charge, hope to have pics to show next week along with another special little pair ...............
I've also picked up my pencil and paper this week for the first time in years and am honing my rusty drawing skills for a miniature idea I've had........................if this works out I will be very excited to show pictures, fingers crossed !

Haiti Disaster Auction

Anyone watching the harrowing news footage this week of the Haiti earthquake is probably feeling like I do right now,
wishing there was something we could do to help.
I am donating all proceeds from my ebay auction this week to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) - which in major crises brings together 13 leading UK aid agencies to raise money to help save lives and rebuild shattered communities.

The auction is for a very sweet little flower girl , Her start bid is £35 .

This is the link to the auction

A Bargain Find

I just couldn't resist showing off my bargain find ! Out shopping for new wellies yesterday I was
browsing through the clearance shelves of our local TKMaxx when my eyes lit up.
There on the shelf was something that surely was meant for me and greatly reduced to just £7 !!
I looked in delight at the fabulous red ceramic boots decorated with green spotted bows and topped with a lovely green plate decorated in red polka dots ....................... quite possibly the most flamboyant cake stand I have ever seen !
My mind immediately thought of the wicked witch of the west and her ruby slippers , these werent exactly ruby slippers and had a large chip on one, but with a yellow brick road on the top it will make the perfect display for my wizard of oz dolls ( work in progress.....................watch this space........................)
I tried it for size with a few witches and its just perfect !
it was worth digging the car out of our now melting snow for this and once I repair the chip it will be gracing my stand at my fairs this year :0) ( I wonder if anyone actually has one of these and uses it for cakes ?? it would look fab with some really over the top cupcakes !)

Little People and a Big Chill !

It seems like a while since I posted
photos of my new dolls so here are a couple of nearly new ones !
The little girl is on ebay this week, her auction ends on sunday.
I loved this photo as she looks so sweet and sulky in my hand but I didnt use it in the auction listing because I noticed the state of my hand !
I'm working on building an Edwardian dolls house shop right now and chronicling progress on my other blog http://www.diaryofanedwardiandollshouse.blogspot.com/ A close up of this photo shows my broken nail, paint in my other nails and enamel paint on my hand............ how I wish I could understand my photoshop program LOL !
The other wee chap is a 24th scale fellow, less than three inches tall who just makes me smile evey time I look at him :0) Although he is for sale I will miss his wee face when I wave him off to a new home one day.
This week I'm mostly indoors due to the Big Chill ...........................this was the view from my back door yesterday morning and unbelievably now we have even more of the stuff !

If ever there was an excuse to stay in and make miniatures then this is it !
Woke up to minus 5C temperature this morning !
My shed is positively Siberian so I have temporarily moved into my kitchen where its toasty warm and the cats dont need to venture out into snow neck high to find me .....

I'm working on a rather handsome barber this week who has none of sweeneys murderous tendencies .
Hopefully I will have photos of some new dolls to show next week :0)
If your snowed in like me, stay warm and stay safe, its really best not to venture out on the roads unless its essential.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !

First foot ...........

As is the New Year tradition here you might like to take a peek into my newly organised shed and be my First Footer ! You might not have dark hair or be holding a piece of coal but thats okay,I dont mind, youre welcome here :0)
I'll show you round :0)

Here is my unnaturally tidy desk, it never ever looks like this and probably wont do so again until 2011 !

Give me half an hour on it come monday morning and it will look much more like home ............

The first thing you see when you walk in the door is the old dresser, a bargain find and the place where I keep my silks in the drawers and my clay in its cool dark cupboards. Some of my books are here, and my drawers full of ribbons . My containers of miniature accessories are here too and the shop box I bought last year but never got round to filling................ another project for 2010 !
Next to the dresser is my old sideboard where my cooker sits ready to bake my sculpts.I have lots of bits and bobs in those tins and you can see my green witch pelham puppet hanging there next to my old china cabinet. She is very, very old and very, very scary and my daughter bought her for me for xmas this year.As a child I wanted her so much but my mam thought her terrifying and bought me the much friendlier white witch. I always lamented the fact she was never mine . Having took a good look at my green witch now I can see why my mam didnt buy her LOL she is terrifying but in a good way and I love her to bits !

I love this wall, I have my old wooden cabinet which holds all my paints and brushes soI can easily find them and underneath my singer sewing machine which belonged to my great grandma . The old singer sewing table was bought by me last year and also houses a machineYou can see I have more pelham puppets hanging here, this little boy and girl are sweethearts and a lot prettier than the old witch !

This corner houses all my fabrics and trims. The boxes were flat packed from ikea and I waxed them and labelled them and now can find anything I need at a glance.
My sewing box table is also here, bought on ebay last year and now indispensable !
My fireplace is a cosy place to sit while sketching ideas or having a cup of tea. I have my noticeboards there to keep me organised and my old dolls. The three on the mantelpiece are poor old lenci dolls in need of some repair but loved anyway, especially the large ballerina whose dress is so old it falls apart at the touch and whose ballet slippers are hanging on by threads. Her silk stockings though are perfect !
On top of the stove sits a 1920's boudoir doll,Priscilla who likes to watch me work ...............
The doll in the chair only came into the shed temporarily when I had workmen here last year and will be coming back into my home after the holidays, she is a very lovely wax over porcelein hildegarde gunzel doll. As you can tell, I make miniature dolls but collect larger ones and have many more in my home !So there we have it, far too tidy for its own good, but still my place ,where I feel totally at ease and where I can create.

Its changed a lot in the few short months since I had it built but now I feel settled in and am really looking forward to putting the key in the door on monday morning and settling down to make the first dolls of 2010 ,

A snowy start

I woke this morning to a very snowy new years day .
This was the view from my kitchen window of my dear shed, covered in snow and looking just like a swiss chalet !

I will be back in it come monday morning when I'm officially back to work and you know , I just cant wait !
Much as I've enjoyed the holidays I'm now having serious dollmaking withdrawal symptoms .
It feels like so long since I picked up a block of clay I just hope I can remember what to do with it !

I spent some of last week sorting out the shed and getting it all in order for the new year , I've certainly managed to fill it up in a few short months , I will post some pics later for anyone who wants to peek in :0)
Right now I'm off to the New years Day Antiques Fair at Gateshead Stadium , I love to go and see what I can find, cant think of a nicer way to spend the morning than rummaging round lots of lovely old stuff and am hoping to find some vintage lace and fabrics .

I hope everyone had a safe and happy new years eve and that there arent too many hangovers this morning...............
We had a quiet family new year although my lads had a livelier time and I met one of them coming in as I was getting up this morning !
However you spent it , heres hoping 2010 has lots of good things in store for us all :0)

New Year, New Look !

2009 is almost over.
I cant quite believe it ! It seems like only yesterday I was a young girl bang smack in the middle of the seventies and the millenium seemed a million years away. I remember school girl conversations working out how old we would be in the year 2000 and here we are coming up to 2010 !
I never really liked New Year when I was a young girl , it always seemed so sad to me that the year was over and the xmas decorations would be packed away , then all those resolutions to keep and thank you letters to write .
As a teenager this all changed and the excitement of new year parties and celebrations more than made up for the fact that xmas was over ! I loved every minute and each new year would start with resolutions to diet and become impossibly glamourous , which of course lasted until teatime on New Years Day ................
Now I look forward to every New Year .I love the possibilities a new year brings with it.
All the opportunities just waiting to be grabbed............................ all the things I just might achieve if I work hard enough..............................and all the fun I might have if I dont work too hard !
In anticipation of the new year ahead I have a new look to the blog, thought I would match it to my Diary of an Edwardian Dolls House blog as I love it so much.
Thanks to all of you who have visited my new blog :0) I am very excited about it and plan to have a lot of fun there as the new year progresses.
Whatever 2009 brought you, wether it was good or bad,( I had a bit of both !) I hope you are feeling positive about the new year and ready to give it your best shot.
I know I am,
